Serie Psy-Changeling
La serie Psy/Changeling di Nalini Singh è una delle migliori che abbia letto ultimamente, e sicuramente una delle migliori serie urban fantasy oggi in circolazione. Circolazione internazionale, ma non ancora italiana, purtroppo, sebbene anche in Europa sia stata tradotta con ottimi risultati di critica positiva, gradimento e vendita in vari paesi (Gran Bretagna, Germania, Spagna; si possono trovare alcune informazioni qui http://letturedimari.blogspot.com/2011/11/la-serie-psychangeling-in-tedesco.html e qui http://letturedimari.blogspot.com/2011/11/la-serie-psicambiantes-in-spagnolo-di.html).
La serie è adatta ad adulti, sia per temi che per descrizioni.
Che cosa contraddistingue e differenzia la serie Psy/Changeling da altre serie?
Innanzitutto è scritta molto bene: l'inglese della Singh è raffinato, preciso, curato, ma al contempo molto fresco, moderno e vivace. I caratteri sono veridici, mai scontati o banali, le personalità forti, complesse, le definizioni di pensieri e azioni non noiose, ma intriganti e approfondite, le azioni hanno sempre ragioni ben precise dietro di esse, anche se a volte non vengono subito svelate. Le trame sono avvincenti. Il mondo che la Singh delinea è ben coeso e convincente. Gli esseri che compongono il mondo da lei delineato interagiscono, si confrontano, si scontrano, si studiano, si innamorano, e scoprono che solo insieme possono trovare non solo la felicità, ma anche le risposte che cercano su sé stessi, sulla propria vita, sul proprio futuro.
Questo mondo ha anche un passato sensato che di libro in libro si delinea sempre più chiaramente, e che continuamente dona al lettore spunti di riflessione su temi importanti, quali la convivenza tra diversi, il male nella società umana, la libertà, il rifiuto, l'accettazione e il modo di gestire i sentimenti e gli impulsi, l'ecologia, l'educazione dei figli, le gerarchie nelle strutture sociali, che non hanno a che fare con il potere, quanto piuttosto con il prendersi cura degli altri...

Nalini Singh è nata alle isole Fiji nel 1977 da genitori di origine indiana (come evidenzia il suo cognome, caratteristico dei sikh) e oggi vive in Nuova Zelanda.

La storia d'amore è importante, ma non preponderante, e soprattutto è ben legata alla trama e caratterizzata da uno spiccato accento sulle personalità coinvolte, sulla loro psicologia, sui caratteri, sul contesto in cui operano, sulle decisioni e le scelte, mai semplici, ma sofferte e importanti.
Le scene intime non sono mai banali né scontate o ripetitive, a volte più delicate, altre volte più passionali, ma sempre legate
ai caratteri di volta in volta in ballo, tanto che nessuna coppia interagisce allo stesso modo di altre.
L'intreccio inoltre si sviluppa di libro in libro, rendendo sempre più complessa la vicenda di base e consentendo lo sviluppo di trame articolate anche se centrate sui due protagonisti principali.

Un'altra caratteristica che mi ha fatto amare questa serie è che descrive e presenta un mondo multietnico, in cui la differenza è percepita e
vissuta come bellezza e ricchezza. Il melting pot è una realtà nel mondo descritto da Nalini Singh, è una realtà talmente ovvia che non c'è neanche bisogno di spiegarla. I nomi dei personaggi, sia protagonisti che comprimari, mostrano chiaramente una mescolanza di popoli che è realtà conclamata e riconosciuta come positiva.
E poi, nei libri di Nalini Singh c’è molta verità. Una verità che riguarda noi esseri umani, il modo in cui pensiamo a noi stessi e il modo in cui ci relazioniamo agli altri. Nalini Singh è capace di andare in profondità nel cuore degli esseri umani. Penso ad esempio alla scena del parto di Sascha (da Kiss of snow), a come la scrittrice ci fa entrare nell'animo tormentato di Dorian (Hostage to pleasure), a come riesce a descrivere i
diversi modi del fiorire dell’amore, lo sviluppo di sentimenti che divengono sempre più forti e coinvolgenti non perché (come purtroppo avviene in altri libri) si approfondisce sempre più il lato sensuale, ma perché si approfondisce quello personale, attraverso il dialogo, l'interazione, la conoscenza.
La gran parte dei personaggi femminili di Nalini Singh ha uno spessore inconsueto nel genere urban fantasy: sono donne forti, determinate, intelligenti, pronte a combattere e sacrificarsi per coloro che amano, con una interiorità ricca e complessa. Riescono a lasciarti a bocca aperta, e rendono orgogliose che una scrittrice donna ci sappia descrivere e tratteggiare così bene.
C'è un'unica cosa che non ho apprezzato. Io credo che occorra lasciare ai personaggi la
libertà di essere ciò che sono. Che tutto, proprio tutto vada a posto è un elemento che tendo a non apprezzare così tanto, perché non è la mia esperienza della vita: non credo che sia questo il senso della felicità, che tutto torni e vada a posto. Porto ad esempio Dorian: sarebbe andato bene lo stesso, anche se alla fine non avesse potuto colmare il suo handicap genetico, anzi sarebbe stato meglio, a mio giudizio. Perché avrebbe potuto essere felice lo stesso. La stessa cosa vale per altri personaggi, che secondo me sarebbero stati più autentici se non avessero avuto questa sorta di happy end totale, ma questo è chiaramente un giudizio di valore, e dipende dal fatto che per me è estremamente importante che i libri mostrino che si può essere felici anche se si è segnati, che si può amare ancora nella vita, anche dopo la perdita di un grande amore, che le ferite non spariscono, ma cicatrizzano e la cicatrice la devi portare. C'è un balsamo dell'amore che guarisce (bellissima la descrizione di come Sascha riesca a curare le profonde crepe nell'anima di Lucas), ma non può restituire quello che non c'è più, anche se può insegnare a trarre cose buone dalle proprie ferite: attenzione, cura, compassione, impegno, dolcezza, determinazione.
Comunque, il mondo che Nalini Singh delinea è una delle terre della fantasia migliori di cui io abbia mai letto. Per intenderci: Tolkien e Ende hanno creato mondi che sono
evidentemente fantastici. Pratchett ha creato un mondo che è evidentemente una
parodia dei mondi tipici del genere fantasy, ma che contemporaneamente mette in
ridicolo il nostro mondo. Nalini Singh, come Marion Zimmer Bradley (ciclo di Darkover) e
come Pullman (trilogia Queste oscure materie), crea un mondo che è verosimile, che
sembra in tutto e per tutto reale: quando lo leggi ti dimentichi che non è il
tuo mondo, da quanto è realistico, sensato, motivato, coerente, organico. Per
me questa è la vera straordinarietà in un libro del genere fantasy.
